Do you find yourself flipping through home design magazines because youcan’t get enough cutting edge ideas? Are you in tune to yoursurroundings and strongly affected by the physical and visual elementsof your everyday environments? Do you consider yourself creative anddrawn to ascetically pleasing things? If so, you are likely thinkingabout a career change into interior design. It’s time to spend acouple of days with Lisa Peck at Pisa Design in Minneapolis, Minnesota to see if you can mold your talents andinterests into your dream job as a successful interior designer.

Lisareceived her degree in interior design from Iowa State University andhas since combined years of experience, countless awards, and notablepublishing credits into her successful interior design company. Goingbeyond interior decorating, an interior designer deals with largerissues such as the design of non-structural walls and space planning.

Whenasked if someone or something specifically inspired her to follow thiscareer path, Lisa recalls warmly, “Well, thinking back, my mother paida lot of attention to our house when I was growing up. That very wellcould have influenced me. And when I was in fourth grade, I had asketchbook and I would use it to draw various rooms in our house indifferent styles. I still have that sketchbook!” Although showing signsof her talents in this field at such a young age, she admits she reallyhad no idea that this was what she would end up doing or that it was areal career option.

Upon enrolling in college, Lisa chose thesafe and practical route of pursuing a degree in business instead oflistening to the inner tugs of her creative side. Shortly thereafter, her mother tragically died at the very young age of 45. Lisa considersher mom’s death as the turning point that changed everything. It was atthat time that she realized how short life is and how important it isto pursue one’s true passion.

Lisa decided to follow the stepsto achieve her goal. She earned her degree in interior design and thenspent a few years at three different interior design firms. Lisa feelsher experience working with those firms, two residential and onecommercial, was extremely valuable; not only with design concepts, butalso learning about running a business. “The business side of things issomething you don't really learn in school and things like the chain ofdistribution, for example, are things you can only really learn on thejob”, she notes.

When people entertain the thought of a careeras an interior designer, Lisa feels they often just focus on thecreative and design elements of the job. However there are a number ofother important skills that are essential to successfully taking adesign idea from conception through the build-out. This includes lessglamorous duties such as tedious paperwork and production managementduties. The variety of work involved in this profession is one of thethings Lisa enjoys most about her job. In addition to loving variety,Lisa feels a successful interior designer must also be adaptable andflexible to different personalities, situations, and ideas.

ForLisa, the most rewarding part of her dream job is getting to know herclients over a span of a year or more and seeing their improved livingspace has, indeed, impacted their life in a positive way. Perhaps theyare now pursuing a hobby for which they are passionate because theyhave the space to do so; or maybe they are fighting less with theirteenagers because of the way a house was re-designed to give everyone alittle more personal space.

She also just loves feeling atrue sense of creative success. Standing back and being able to say"Wow! This is an idea I had and now I'm seeing the final product”, shesays,” is truly a blessing.” Lisa understands that seeing the fruitsof one's labor, whether physical or creative, is extremely rewarding. For this reason, she often tries to share photographs of the finalspaces with the various vendors who helped with bits and pieces of theproject along the way. When asked if she feels that she is living herdream job, Lisa exclaims, "Oh my God, yes! I'm so lucky to be doingwhat I'm doing and I absolutely love sharing it with others."
