Do you think you are a talented songwriter just waiting to be discovered? Are you intrigued with the world of music publishing and how a song gets recorded? Can you envision yourself becoming part of the Nashville music scene? Experience the home of country music on a VocationVacations® songwriter and music publisher dream job holiday with Ree Guyer Buchanan and her team at Wrensong Publishing, one of the top independent publishing companies on Music Row.
Ree Buchanan got an early start in the music business. Growing up in St. Paul, Minnesota, she sang commercials for Dairy Queen and began to play the guitar and write songs for her church. However, her early and long-time ambition was to become a potter, and she began working at a pottery studio at the age of fourteen. After graduating from college, she became a production potter, but she soon discovered that pottery really wasn’t the way she wanted to make a living. At that time, her father, Reyn Guyer, was developing Wrensong Publishing, a division of his company, Winsor Concepts (this company owns the patent on Nerf and Twister). Wrensong’s goal was to help writers pitch songs to major recording artists. Ree decided to join her father in the venture. This decision launched Ree on a path that would lead to an extremely successful career in the song writing and music publishing business.
Ree and her father soon realized Nashville was the place to be to compete in this business. In 1984, Ree and the company moved from St. Paul to the country capital of the world and opened an office on Music Row. “Back then Nashville was very small with only six or seven producers to pitch songs to,” explains Ree. “It was a very welcoming place and a melting pot of incredible people.” Ree worked hard, did her research, was persistent, and utilized her natural gift for recognizing great music. In 1985, Ree landed her first cut. “Little Things,” recorded by the Oak Ridge Boys, became a number one single. A year later, Wrensong signed its first staff writer, Jon Vezner, and within eighteen months Vezner had his first two singles, “Just Can’t Sit Down Music,” recorded by Mel Daniels, and “Trainwreck of Emotion,” recorded by Lorrie Morgan.
More than twenty years later, Wrensong’s catalogue of songs has grown from the original twenty to 5,000. Ree, president and co-owner of the company, has become known for developing writers and being an excellent song plugger. She has focused on building a catalogue of unique songs like, “Where’ve You Been” and “How Can I help You Say Goodbye,” both Grammy/CMA nominated Songs of the Year. Examples of other Wrensong catalogue hits include: “Wild One” by Faith Hill; “Whiskey Lullaby” by Brad Paisley/Alison Krauss; “Stranded,” the last big hit by Heart; and album cuts by many others from Ray Charles to Kenny Chesney.
Ree works with a staff of five writers, a copyright administrator and a catalogue administrator. “We work hard, but it is the music that gets us in the door,” explains Ree. Ree also admits that is not so much what you know but who you know that makes you successful in her business. And what makes a songwriter successful? “The songwriters who make it are not necessarily more talented than the others, but they have a strong work ethic, are willing to learn the craft, and will do whatever it takes to succeed.” Ree has mentored many songwriters over the years. “One of my greatest rewards in this business is when I can turn a writer who was a ‘nobody’ into a ‘somebody’.”
In the last few years, Ree has focused on developing artists as well as writers. For example, she has helped secure deals for the Evinrudes on Mercury NY; Jon Randall on Sony, and Blue County on Asylum. “I would love to develop both a female and male super star artist,” explains Ree. And considering the success Ree has achieved, some artists are going to get very lucky if Ree shares her experience and talents with them.
