Have you always found yourself to be insightful, viewing your surroundings just a little differently than those around you? Do you use your camera to express yourself? Do you like to capture an image in a way that reflects your own style and creativity? Then it’s time for you to test out what it’s like to be a Photographer and join Sam Martinez on a VocationVacations dream job holiday! Sam has always had a love of photography. He began taking pictures in high school and continued at Texas Tech, where he enrolled as a business major. He was a photographer for the campus newspaper, but hadn’t really considered making his passion his career until he won a photography contest for the Brooks Institute of Photography. He won a bit of money and his photo entry was published; his very first publication! It was at this point that Sam decided to change his major from business to photography. Upon graduation with his degree in photography, it was up to Sam to find professional mentors who he could assist. During this time, he learned a lot about the people in the industry, make-up artists, hair stylists, models and tech support. He put together his portfolio and was on his way as a photographer entrepreneur! Sam’s style of photography is very unique. He decided from the beginning that he wanted to be in control of his creativity. He listens carefully to his client’s ideas and what they want, and then uses his own style to deliver a product that exceeds their expectations. His use of bright, vibrant colors enhances and highlights his products and models. A Sam Martinez shoot is recognizable and will not be confused with other photographers. When asked what he’d most like a Vocationer to learn from him, Sam said, “I want to teach them how to make yourself stand out.” What Sam enjoys most in his career is working with people and the spontaneity of it all. He learned early on that he performs well in the bigger productions. The excitement of 30 people running around on a set, moving lights, touching up make-up, arranging products, brings an energy that results in the great photos that have become his trademark. Sam has a wide range of clients that include American Express, Frito Lay, Hilton, Home Depot, Verizon and Bank of America, among many other notable corporations. He is beginning to see more work with celebrities as well. Imagine being flown to Hawaii to photograph the great Elton John! And for fun, Sam has begun shooting music bands for CD covers, magazines and promotional materials. The art of photography has changed dramatically with the introduction of digital images. While Sam concedes that he likes digital photography better than film, he feels lucky to have been trained first on film. “Film taught you how to shoot it right the first time”, while digital “helps you make pictures better than they were.” While on your photographer VocationVacations® dream holiday with Sam Martinez, activities will include some or all of the following:
