Do you wish you could spend all day checking out hot, new bands on MySpace? Does the thought of delivering a rock star to an audience of thrilled fans get your blood pumping? Music fans, pack your bags. You’re ready to head to Austin, Texas to spend two days scouting talent on an exciting VocationVacations® holiday with music talent agent, Roggie Lynn Baer. “I know my family would say it was a hobby that developed along the way, but between us, it has been a lifelong passion. Music has driven me since childhood,” says Roggie. Despite majoring in chemistry in college, Roggie’s interests have led her toward the music industry from an early age. Writing features for her high school newspaper, Roggie wrote about several local bands. Her high-school sweetheart was even in a band produced by Alice Cooper. As Roggie says, “To me, the most exciting part was what their manager did—and he did it from the perspective of live touring, as he was a live music club owner.” Spurred by her early brush with the music industry, Roggie went on to become music director of her college radio station; buyer for the largest student-run festival in the country, Spring Fling; and booker for the weekly concert series “Eat to the Beat.” Strong personal drive and a deep love of music helped Roggie build her experience into a company, RajiWorld, which today handles talent recruitment and booking for musicians such as AJ CROCE, BILLY HARVEY, EARL POOLE BALL, EDISON CHAIR, FRIENDS OF DEAN MARTINEZ, GREY DeLISLE, KATHY VALENTINE, LUCKY TOMBLIN, MATT HUBBARD, McLEMORE AVENUE, MICHAEL LILLE, MONTE WARDEN, MURRY HAMMOND, NAKIA & HIS SOUTHERN COUSINS, PAMELA Des BARRES, RICHARD BARONE, SKYROCKET (formerly Ktel Hit Machine), SUZANNA CHOFFEL, TRIPLE COBRA, and those up and coming in her teen division, ALTWorld. Roggie has also worked with prominent artists such as Giant Sand, Green on Red, Daniel Johnston, and Rufus Wainwright. “I prefer all things from the growth level, seeds, planning stages,” she says. “I feel a career in this industry has many rewards for those of us who really enjoy creating out of thin air and planning to the detail.” To succeed as a talent agent in the fast-paced music industry, Roggie says that it helps to have a positive attitude, be a bit of an extrovert, and nurture an entrepreneurial streak. “The core qualities needed would be a very high energy level, a can-do resourceful attitude, fortitude, and an innate trust, as some risk is involved.” Balance is also important: “I recommend getting enough sleep, exercise, and eating a healthy diet, leaving the drinking and all that to others. I keep a pretty tight schedule and attempt to begin work and end at the same time daily.” Taking care of herself makes Roggie better able to enjoy her job while meeting the needs of her clients. “My favorite part of the work is the nearly daily ability to feel proud of the work accomplished. It is a thrill to find a new venue that suits the artist and fills in a gap on a tour.” Even with her years of experience, Roggie finds that working with talented musicians is still a thrill. “It feels great to have my calls returned by those I admire,” she says, adding that it’s also a great compliment to receive “ongoing and constant submissions from talented bands not yet on my roster, without any form of advertising.” In spite of her own successes, Roggie says, “the achievements I am most proud of are those of my clients. In the 2007 South by Southwest (SXSW), six of them were awarded ‘Best Of’ in their category. Additionally, one band has opened for The Rolling Stones and had Peter Townshend as a special guest performer; another band has increased their guarantees more then tenfold; and still another has become the highest profile band in Austin to hire for weddings, galas, and corporate events. All of them receive national press and radio play year round.” Like any job, Roggie points out, being a talent agent involves some challenges. “The two negatives I have worked with since I began include a smaller chance to become wealthy than other industries and, from time to time, less professionalism in business dealings. It is a passion-driven field, so it attracts love over money, and also people with views or professional ethics that may not meld with your own,” she explains. Nevertheless, Roggie loves the energy and variety of working within the music community. “My favorite part of the music industry as a whole is absolutely the people! To be surrounded with artists that speak to such a diverse range of subjects is a blessing.” Bringing those artists to a wider audience, Roggie’s work as a music talent agent lets her share her love of music with people all over the world.
