Lights! Camera! Action! Are you interested in the business of television? Have you ever wanted to look through the camera lens, capturing all the action? Or call the shots for a television commercial? How would you like to tell a story about real people doing extraordinary things in their community? If you’ve ever watched television and said, “Why did they do it that way?”… get ready for your TV producer VocationVacation and find out why. Executive Producer of Oregon Living Television, Kathy Kingsbury and her team, will show you the ropes of local television from start to finish. Your dream job holiday working in television production awaits you in Cottage Grove, Oregon, just outside of Eugene, home to the University of Oregon. When she was in college, Kathy was inspired to pursue TV production for one simple reason – she wanted to be on TV. During an internship at a Santa Barbara, California, television station, Kathy developed a passion for the work behind the camera. Another passion revealed itself, too – Kathy met her husband, who was also working at the station. The two spent some time producing local news. The couple later started their own production company and did everything from producing spots for Entertainment Tonight, to producing a travel show featuring California’s Central Coast. The couple sold their California production company in 2003 and came to Oregon to raise their daughter. But the TV bug never let go. Kathy decided to go back into producing, and for the past four years she and her husband have been producing their show, Oregon Living Television for a local FOX affiliate. The weekend show highlights Oregon’s history, travel spots, cuisine and dining. In all her years working in TV, Kathy has spent plenty of time both behind and in front of the camera. To describe Kathy as a skilled multi-tasker would be an understatement. Her work as a TV producer draws from a broad variety of skills. On any given day she may find herself writing the script for an upcoming show; speaking at a charity event; going on a shoot; doing an on-camera interview for a segment; filming a segment herself; meeting with clients; or sitting in on an editing session. Kathy does admit to the downsides to TV production, the largest of which is perhaps keeping up with the cost of ever-evolving video technology. When she started in the television news business, Kathy was also surprised by how many decisions were driven by the business side of news rather than the journalistic side. “Local news has such a small budget they tend to focus on easy stories,” Kathy says. “They have to roll several shows a day, and there’s not enough time to build and tell great stories because it costs money.” For these reasons, Kathy and her husband created Oregon Living Television, a weekly 30-minute program showcasing the people and places that make Oregon special. Kathy loves the niche she and her husband have found. “I sure do have a passion for it,” Kathy says. “I am impressed by the people I meet. Everyone has a story. Oregon Living Television is the perfect avenue for showcasing great people doing great things in their community.” Kathy appreciates the process of television production and the instant gratification of watching something she just taped. Her passion lies in telling the stories of unsung heroes, something she gets to do with Oregon Living Television. “Television is a powerful tool. I use it to shine the light on real people and real places,” Kathy says. “I found the little people were being overlooked. I wanted to do human interest stories. When I interview folks about their business or non-profit organization I learn about their lives. I learn about the sacrifices, the support, the generosity and the impact they have. The interview process provides the opportunity for me to recognize and appreciate what they do. It generates a spark, and they see for themselves that they have indeed made a difference. I get to say ‘Great work!’ That’s my job. I hold the light so they can see how great they are."
