Nina has been in the McDonald’s family for as long as she can remember. Her father was an early franchisee, who at his peak owned 14 McDonald’s in Georgia, back when founder Ray Kroc was active in the business. When Nina was a teenager, she worked in her father’s McDonald’s. She always got the tough jobs, like scrubbing the floor, because she was the owner’s daughter. After college, Nina set out on her own path and worked in the insurance industry for 15 years. But when time came for her father to retire, he asked her if she was interested in buying him out. She said yes. “McDonald’s is very particular about whom they sell to,” Nina says. “It’s not a shoe-in for the second generation.” Nina went through the two-year process of getting approved as a franchisee by McDonald’s (she even has a bachelor’s degree in hamburgerology from McDonald’s Hamburger University). In 2001, she opened her own brand new McDonald’s. Shortly thereafter Nina bought her father’s stores, and in the summer of 2007 she opened her sixth store. The diversity of work as an owner-operator keeps Nina on her toes. “Every day is a little bit different,” she said. “I may spend some time in the office working with my office manager and reviewing financials; or I may be on site at the restaurants meeting with managers and training staff. I also spend time out in the community attending Ronald McDonald House Charities board meetings and talking to high school students about opportunities at McDonald’s. It never gets boring!” Nina says the most difficult aspect of her job is finding and retaining great employees. “There are huge opportunities at every level. There are people who start out as crew and end up as operators,” Nina proudly states.” Nina touts McDonald’s as a great place to learn everything from marketing to inventory. “The neat thing about being a part of McDonald’s is you learn so much,” explains Nina. You learn the importance of marketing and food-cost control; how inventory works and how to make a truck order; how to schedule employees; and most importantly how to be a hospitality ambassador for the company.” All of this is learned from the guidance and opportunities found under the “golden arches.” While on your McDonald’s franchise owner VocationVacations® dream job holiday with Nina Gompels, activities will include some or all of the following:
