Would you like to spend a day in the life of a baseball broadcaster and hear the bats crack inside one of the finest clubhouse and training facilities in Minor League AAA baseball? Have you always wanted to sit in the control room, grab the microphone, and announce the starting lineup? Is “America’s Favorite Pastime” yours, too? Then step up to the plate at AutoZone Ballpark in Memphis, Tennessee, for a VocationVacations® Sports Announcer dream job holiday with broadcaster Steve Selby for the Memphis Redbirds, a AAA minor league affiliate for the St. Louis Cardinals. Steve Selby has loved baseball all his life. At five years old, he began collecting trading cards and quoting stats for his favorite player, Willie Mays. My brothers and I used these cards to play our own baseball card game, keeping stats throughout the season,” remembers Steve. “And, of course, I did the play-by-play commentary.” He set his course early towards his dream job for becoming a baseball broadcaster. After a stint in broadcasting school in Florida, Steve spent half a dozen years calling Little League in Alabama. He broke into the Minor Leagues when he landed an announcing job with the Kinston Eagles in North Carolina. “I got the job, but I also had to drive the team bus,” he laughs. He went on to broadcast for the Durham Bulls (home to the famous movie, Bull Durham), Sumter Flyers, Huntsville Stars, and Nashville Sounds before taking the microphone for the Memphis Redbirds in 2000. Steve works hard to bring the game to life for the fans. “A good sports announcer needs to bring their personality to the broadcast, be ready to ad lib for three to four hours, and have confidence in what they are saying,” he says. His inspiration for being the best he can be on (and off) the microphone came from two people he admires. "Dick Enberg is the consummate professional sports broadcaster and my role model. Early on I learned a valuable lesson from Ernie Hall who drilled me to always remember it's about the guys between the white lines." Over the years, Steve has counted some great players as friends. "I knew them when they were young and naive, and now they are rich and famous like Rondell White of the Minnesota Twins, who was called up from the Sumter team.” What's the best part of his day as a team announcer? "Batting practice. It is so pure, just the bats, the baseballs, and the players," says Steve. Will that be the best part of your VocationVacation or will it be ad libbing your baseball knowledge over the microphone with a thousand listeners? Meeting the players and management? Working on stats and graphics for their incredible scoreboard? Steve Selby will show you how to be a colorful commentator and let your personal style create a great experience for the fans. While on your VocationVacations® Sports Announcer dream job holiday with Steve Selby at the Memphis Redbirds, you will be mentored in some or all of the following:
