Have you recorded every moment in your family’s life through photographs? Are you more comfortable behind the camera than behind your desk at the office? Does creating memories that can be enjoyed for a lifetime give you a real sense of accomplishment? If so, it is time to see what it takes to become a portrait photographer by joining Lori Berkowitz of Lori Berkowitz Photography for a VocationVacations® career mentorship. While other kids were playing with toy cameras, Lori was honing her photography skills with the real thing. Introduced to photography by her photo enthusiast father, she got her first Canon SLR at age twelve and soon realized she loved taking photos of people and had a real talent for it. Lori completed her education with a degree in sociology at the University of Colorado, and she then returned to her native New York and began working as a freelance photo editor. “I wanted to establish myself in this field, but I also found myself wanting to pursue by longtime interest in people-oriented photography,” remembers Lori. Her friends and associates helped her in this pursuit. They recognized Lori’s talent as a real “people” person and began to hire her as a photographer. That was in 1998. Over the years, Lori has earned a reputation as a skilled and talented portrait photographer capable of producing top quality work. She has a portfolio that includes photos of Mary J. Blige, Joe Gerardi, Justin Beiber, Kenny Chesney, Prince Harry, Nacho Figueras and Bernadette Peters. The common denominators in all of Lori’s photos are people and her desire to bring her subjects “to life” through her photos. And how does she successfully achieve this? “I shoot from the heart,” offers Lori. “If you follow your passion you will be able to capture the very essence of a person; something the average observer might miss.” Lori’s occupation is considered by many to be a dream job, but there can be challenges in working with her subjects. Lori handles it all with professionalism and creativity. “When you are prepared and you know your camera, you make images that are an extension of what you see from behind the camera and what you want others to see,” says Lori.
