Are you a detail-oriented, computer savvy self-starter? Do you work well independently and are able to stay focused and motivated in a non-traditional working environment? Do you want to own a business that allows you the flexibility to balance not only your own work/life needs but those of your clients? With today’s technology, you can create your own home-based business as a virtual assistant….and Kathy McHenry can show you how. Learn how to become a virtual assistant on a VocationVacations® career mentorship with Kathy at her home office in Fredericksburg, Virginia, 50 miles south of Washington, D.C. Not that long ago many people didn’t know what a virtual assistant was. But Kathy McHenry did, and she knew she had the experience to become successful in the field. She also knew she wanted to own her own business. Kathy was ready to parlay her more than two decades of administrative and support services experience into a new career. She realized the time to take that step had come while working near the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. “The trauma of the experience that day made the idea of working from home even more appealing,” remembers Kathy. Providing administrative and support services from a home office sounded like a perfect match. She took advantage of a variety of resources to learn more about the role of a virtual assistant, and in 2002 launched her business. “My first client was a realtor, and I helped with transaction management, making sure all the documents were completed,” says Kathy. Examples of current clients include a professional speaker and trainer for whom she creates collateral materials; a public relations and marketing professional who has Kathy manage her calendar, travel arrangements, scheduling, etc. and a masseuse who hired Kathy to redo her web site. Kathy loves the flexibility of her job and the opportunity to work as much or a little as she wants. Many of Kathy’s clients are entrepreneurs themselves who work from home offices. Having a virtual assistant provides them the auxiliary support they need without hiring an employee and providing office space. “They also don’t have to provide benefits, insurance or bother with payroll taxes,” Kathy explains. Kathy’s clients know they can count on her to get the job done. “I tell my clients I want to work with them the way they want me to work with them. We can communicate via email, the phone, whatever is best for them. They look to me to get the job done and to also offer suggestions that might benefit their business.” Most of the time it isn’t that Kathy’s clients aren’t capable of doing the work Kathy does for them. “They can do it, but they don’t want to. They want to focus on other aspects of their business.” “If you have basic computer skills, an understanding of Microsoft products and the motivation to stay on top of ever-changing technology, you have the foundation to become a virtual assistant,” offers Kathy. “You don’t need to spend a lot of money on computer programs or resources.” On a virtual assistant VocationVacations career mentorship with Kathy, she will share with you how to get started in this profession and the work ethic and motivation that have made her successful.
