Jerry connects people to special places through high-quality visitor information, environmental interpretation and professional guiding. For more than 30 years, first as an archeologist and cultural resources manager and later as a tourism expert, he has pioneered the conservation and use of natural and cultural resources in heritage interpretation and tourism.
As a tourism specialist for the U.S. government, Jerry led numerous trips to Pacific Island nations, Australia, China, the Caribbean and Central America. Since retiring in 2002, he has continued to work as a private consultant helping parks, nonprofits, government agencies and communities develop sustainable tourism and interpretation programs that deliver benefits for the environment, host communities, and visitors. Jerry’s specialties include cultural heritage, educational and nature-based tourism, as well as tourism in developing countries and small islands.
Jerry is active in the National Association for Interpretation (NAI) where he works to promote better integration of interpretation and tourism. The NAI describes the craft of interpretation as on-site informal education programs at parks, monuments, zoos, nature centers, historic sites, museums and aquaria. Such programs and activities are often referred to as "natural interpretation," "cultural interpretation," "resource interpretation" or "heritage interpretation". Jerry is a NAI Certified interpretive Guide (CIG) and Certified Interpretive Trainer (CIT) and is also certified to teach the NAI Certified Interpretive Host (CIH) program.
As the owner of Connecticut Coastal Kayaking, LLC, Jerry has extensive practical experience in the operation of a tourism business. In addition, he is a certified sea kayak instructor and instructor trainer. He works from his home on the shores of Rogers Lake near the mouth of the Connecticut River.
While on your VocationVacations® dream job holiday, Jerry will mentor you some or all of the following activities:
- Evaluation of your sea kayak skills
- Intensive training in sea kayak strokes and maneuvers as needed
- Free time for a fun paddle or to practice your kayaking skills
- Learn the key dimensions of the sea kayak niche market
Tips on how to be a good host and guide/instructor
- Assist in the preparation and delivery of at least one kayak class or tour
- Explanation of the structure and function of the American Canoe Association (ACA) and British Canoe Union (BCU) coastal kayak training and certification programs
- A comprehensive behind-the-scenes look at the operation of a kayak tourism business, including equipment selection and costs, training and hiring instructors, advertising, website development, Limited Liability Corporation status and taxes
- Learn how to have fun and make a profit in your dream job!
The Kayak Outfitter VocationVacations® dream job holiday includes:
- Two days of one-on-one mentorship in your dream job
- The ability to take the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®), an online personality assessment designed to identify interests and skill sets

Reservation, Cancellation and Rescheduling Rules and Conditions:
Full payment of the VocationVacations dream job holiday is required to make a reservation. A $100 non-refundable fee is assessed if a VocationVacations experience is cancelled or rescheduled prior to 14-days of the scheduled VocationVacations holiday, based on the approved availability of the mentor to reschedule. A VocationVacations adventure cannot be rescheduled and is non-refundable if cancelled within 14 days of the scheduled VocationVacations holiday. Written notification of cancellation or rescheduling is required in all cases. In the US, Grounded Nomads, LLC and VocationVacations holidays encourage all customers to acquire travel insurance to cover any unforeseen expenses due to cancellation or rescheduling. In the UK, Grounded Nomads, Ltd and VocationVacations holidays must require all customers to acquire travel insurance to cover any unforeseen expenses due to cancellation or rescheduling and provide verification of such travel insurance to Grounded Nomads, Ltd. |
