John got his first taste of dog training while in the Army. After graduating from jump school, he was driving off base when he noticed a group of German Shepherds running through a complicated obstacle course. That vision baited his curiosity, and it wasn’t long before he began training as a scout dog handler. In fact, John was one of 63 scout dog handlers that served in Vietnam.

Although John has been working with dogs since 1967, he spent much of his life having a day job. He worked in litigation and insurance adjusting until 1989. For nearly twenty years, he put in long hours at the office, finding only minimal time to follow his passion for training animals. After experiencing the early deaths of two of his workaholic friends, John marched into the office and resigned his position, eager to give up his lackluster work lifestyle and spend his days working with dogs. Since John decided to pursue his dream career, he has worked for the US Border Patrol and Drug Task Force as a dog trainer. He now trains dogs in both class settings and in-home sessions. His mission as a dog trainer is to always first train the owners to be a responsible pet owner. His second goal is to train the dog to behave well in any setting. He believes that with the right kind of positive training, any dog can become a loving, trusted and respected member of any family and community.

John’s experience of leaving a long-standing job that lacked fulfillment in order to pursue his passion means that he has a particularly deep understanding of those who are considering a career switch. The Dog Trainer VocationVacations® adventure with John Lacher includes some or all of the following activities:

• Plan daily and weekly class lessons
• Participate in private, in-home and group classes
• Participate in meetings, consultations, and evaluations at customers’ homes, and veterinarian’s office
  
• Process customer orders for products and information
• Contact manufacturers and place orders for products and supplies
• Assist in business marketing
• Practice training of mentor’s own dogs and dogs that are boarded
• Daily follow-up with customers by telephone, email, fax, or mail (regarding questions they may have on training classes, products and fees)
• Manage client communications including brochures, product and training information, thank you cards, and birthday cards to prospective and current clients and their dogs
