Do you have an artistic nature and an eye for details? Are you a team player and problem solver with the ability to build consensus? Do you approach each day with the desire and enthusiasm to learn something new? Then you and Allen Nause, artistic director for Artists Repertory Theatre, have a lot in common. Let Allen share with you his passion and expertise in the world of theatre on a VocationVacations® dream job holiday as an artistic director.
Allen Nause was one of those kids who put on plays in his garage. He thought it was great fun, but he didn’t realize he could actually make a career out of having so much fun. When he was in high school, his family moved from Ohio to California. “The classes in my new school were pretty full, so I had to take what was left – a theatre class,” remembers Allen. This fortunate twist of fate brought his childhood love of play acting into a whole new dimension, and launched him on a path that would lead him to much larger stages than the one in his garage.
Allen earned a degree in theatre arts at California State University in San Francisco. During his college career, Allen spent a summer with The Colorado Shakespeare Festival. “It was my first professional role, and I actually got paid for it. Plus, I had the opportunity to work with people who I admired and who were great mentors. Thirty-five years later, I am still in contact with many of them.” Allen went on to earn a masters in theatre from the University of Colorado and then headed to New York City to hone his acting skills.
A few years later, Allen left New York to accept a position with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. After a successful experience with the festival, Allen moved to Seattle where he brought his talent to the stages of several area professional theatres and also began directing. When a family move brought him to Portland, he decided to turn his attention more to directing, and in 1989 he became the artistic director for Artists Repertory Theatre (A.R.T.).
As artistic director, Allen articulates and oversees the artistic vision of the theatre. He is responsible for choosing the plays, hiring the actors, directors, designers, supervising all the production elements, directing at least two plays a season, and assisting the board in their fund-raising efforts. Allen is instrumental in bringing everything and everyone together for a successful production. “The theatre truly is a team sport,” says Allen. “A director is like a coach who eventually turns the game over to the team to win over the fans. You have to be able to delegate, build trust, and provide the vision and excitement to motivate your team.”
In addition to the many plays he has directed at A.R.T., Allen has an impressive list of international directing credits. He directed Our Town in Bangalore, India; traveled to Viet Nam to co-direct a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream; and directed All My Sons with the Palestinian National Theater in Jerusalem. “My greatest reward is when I know I have touched the hearts and minds of the audience and that the experience will linger with them,” says Allen. In addition to directing, he still finds time to act and keeps his love of being on stage alive and has performed at a number of Northwest theatres.
In 2003, Allen was the recipient of the Governor’s Arts Award. “I love what I do,” shares Allen. “Each play offers a new learning and creative experience and the opportunity to bring, smiles, tears or laughter to an audience. It is exciting to connect to the past, learn from the present, and plan for the future. ”
