Baseball Team General Manager
Sports: Fort Worth Cats, Fort Worth, TX
|
Do you love baseball? I mean, REALLY love baseball…perhaps so much that you fantasize about turning this great American pastime into your great American career? Well, before you quit your day job, come take a VocationVacations® holiday to test-drive your dream job as a Baseball Team General Manager.
John Dittrich, Fort Worth Cats General Manager, will be your Mentor as you participate in the day-to-day operations of running a baseball organization. A thirty-four year career as a baseball executive, John started his career in 1974 as Assistant to Texas League President Bobby Bragan. He became a General Manager of the Alexandria Aces the following year and moved with the team to Amarillo in 1976. Bragan became the National Assocation President in 1977 and John followed his mentor to Florida. In 1979 John purchased the Amarillo Gold Sox and ran the operation for four years. He returned to Fort Worth in 1982 working in Player Developement for the Texas Rangers. In 1987 John began his trek across America as a Vice President and General Manager in Columbus (GA), Greensboro (NC), Schaumburg (IL),Fargo (ND), and Calgary, Canada.
The venue for this VocationVacation is LaGrave Field - home of the Fort Worth Cats during two different baseball eras (1926-1964 and 2002-today). LaGrave has a history unmatched by any ballpark in Texas. Hall of Famers like Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams and Stan Musial all played and ran the bases at the original ballpark, which was torn down in the late 60s. Current Cats' owner Carl Bell rebuilt LaGrave field (a cherished part of his boyhood) in 2002, and home plate now sits exactly where it did in 1926 when the old facility opened.
The Fort Worth Cats have led their league in attendance every year since the new LaGrave Field opened in 2002. LaGrave has also been named the Central League's Playing Field of the Year in each of its four years in existence. And, in 2003, the park was named one of the Top 10 Independent Ballparks in the nation by Baseball America and was featured in the 2004 Baseball America "Great Parks" Calendar.
In the midst of great history and recent well-deserved honors, a new Fort Worth tradition has been born - one where families and friends enjoy the old-fashioned joy of baseball, plus the thrills and excitement of a modern-day ballpark.
