Matty has a BA in Business Management from St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota and has been working in restaurants since he was 16 years old. After 10 years of management experience, running everything from sports bars to more upscale, unique eateries, Matty was more than ready to be his own boss. And since Matty is a musician and singer/songwriter in addition to being a Music Cafe Owner, being his own boss meant that music had to be a large part of the menu. Hence, 318 Live Music Café was born. Partnering with his cousin Tom, a professional bass player, Matty set out to make 318 a unique hybrid of coffee, wine and live music. Its consistent great food, knowledgeable wait staff, and a rotation of top-rated musicians have resulted in a loyal following for these hard-working and down-to-earth guys. 318 Live Music Cafe is an intimate “listening room” located in quaint Excelsior, a suburb of Minneapolis. Talented local and national musicians perform acoustic pop, indie folk, rock & roll, heartland soul and other contemporary music for appreciative crowds in a small, homey setting. A short drive to Minneapolis and Mall of America, 318 offers a comfortable and unpretentious place to relax. The cafe is nestled on the shores of Lake Minnetonka among historic Excelsior shops and businesses. Patrons cozy up to the fireplace or sit on a patio near a regional trail favored by bicyclists and walkers. The first-rate coffee/wine/beer selection is accompanied by menu items like roasted apple stuffed crepes, daily made-from-scratch soups, salad nicoise, apple-brie sandwiches and mouthwatering desserts. Due to his success as a local businessperson, Matty has been a keynote speaker for the Entre group (Entrepreneurship Club) at the acclaimed Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. And he and Tom just opened another restaurant in the pretty lakeside area of Waconia called “The Green Room,” offering casual fine dining and a wine bar.
